Narrative

Thomas Abbott was born in Ireland. He married Jane Crawford and they had two children, John Crawford and Anna, by the time they emigrated to Canada. They were in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for the birth of their daughter Jane, in 1819. The family had moved on to Chatham, New Brunswick by the early 1820s, where their children Elizabeth 1, Elizabeth 2, Thomas, Bellinda and Hugh were born. According to the New Brunswick baptism records, Thomas was a lumberman, a labourer, and a farmer by 1830.

Although no baptismal or marriage record has been found for Thomas, from the names of his children, it is possible his parents were Thomas and Anna. I also don't know where Thomas and Jane were from in Ireland.

The daughter Elizabeth who died at 1 year was buried in the graveyard at St. Pauls, but there were no other Abbotts in that cemetery, and no further records found for Bellinda or Hugh.

Daughter Anna married Joseph Burchill in 1834, and John Crawford and Jane married in 1839, to Mary Ann Horton, and Andrew Woodside. From their children's birth records, Anna and her sister were in New Brunswick until 1843, and in New York State from about 1845 onwards. Their brother Thomas went to New York as well.

I was unable to find Thomas or Jane in the 1851 New Brunswick census.

Jane Abbott Woodside and her family were living in Davenport, Iowa at the time of the 1856 census. Anna Abbott Burchill died in Iowa in 1855. By 1860, Joseph Burchill, along with his surviving children and mother-in-law were recorded in Iowa.

It is assumed that Thomas Abbott died before 1860. There was a man named Abbott with Andrew Woodside when he drowned in 1858 - this could have been Thomas, or his son Thomas. That was the only mention of a possible Thomas Abbott in the available records, or newspaper databases.

Jane Crawford Abbott returned to New York, to live with her son Thomas and his wife Mary. She was in New York at the time of the 1880 US census, where she died in 1885.
