Dyment, John 1a 2a 3a
Narrative
John Dyment was the son of Moses Dyment and Maria Ellen Bryant, age 2 in the 1861 census, and born in New Brunswick. He was living with the family in Lot 13 Prince Edward Island in the 1881 census, age 22.
John Dyment and Catherine Murray were married in Summerside PEI on December 15 1886 by Benjamin Chappell, a Methodist minister. Witnesses were Margaret Wright and Mrs. McLean. Catherine was born in Nova Scotia, daughter of Alexander Murray and Susan Logan and sister of Margaret Murray, living with that family in the 1881 census in Lot 13 PEI, age 19.
John and Catherine were in the 1891 census in Lot 14, PEI. John was listed as Joseph Dymend, 32, born New Brunswick. His wife "Catheren" was 29, born in Nova Scotia. They had two children, Alexander (3) and Maried [Marie] Jane (2). John was a farmer; they were living in a one and a half story wooden house with three rooms. Catherine indicated that she could read and write. It was possible that this was the John Dyment who purchased 100 acres in Lot 14 from John Maynard Jr. in November 1884.
Three of their children were in the PEI Baptismal Index: David Henry (born in Harmony, Lot 14), Maria Jane (b. Line Road), and Charles E. (mistake, this is the son of John's brother Robert; John's Alex was baptized on the same day and was listed as Robert's son). All three were baptized in Bideford, in a Bible Christian/Methodist church.
According to his wife Catherine's obituary, the family moved to Lavell, New York in 1892, where their daughter Emma was born. They returned to PEI in 1896, where their son David was born.
In the 1901 census, John, b. NB on 12 December 1858, was living with Catherine (39, born Cape Breton) in Lot 14. Their children were Alex (13), Marie J. (11), John S. (9), Emma U. (7), and David (4). John was a farmer, and the older children were going to school.
Their next son, Frank, was born in the States, around 1901 or 1902. The family had returned to the States, but headed out west this time. In his obituary, it was noted that John had been a pioneer of Sheehan Flat, Washington State.
In the 1910 US census, John claimed to have been married for 23 years, but Catherine said 25! She had had 6 children, all living. John gave his occupation as farmer, and sons Alexander and John S. were working as day labourers. At home in 1910 in Waterville, Douglas, Washington: John Dyment 51, Catharine Dyment 48, Alexander M Dyment 22, Mariah J Dyment 20, John S Dyment 18, Emma N Dyment 16, David Henry Dyment 13 and Frank S Dyment 8.
Washington Death Certificate for John Dyment gives his date of death as 18 Jun 1917, in Withrow, Douglas, Washington, and confirms the names of his parents, Moses Dyment and Maria Bryant. He was 58 years old.
In the 1920 census, Catherine was the head of household, a widow with sons David and Frank, and in 1930 only Frank was still living at home. Son Alexander had died young.
The gravestone for Catherine Murray Dyment gives her dates as 1861 - 1945. From cemetery records in Washington State Digital Archives, John, Catherine Murry Dyment, Alexander, David and Frank were buried in the cemetery in Fraternity, Douglas.
A number of genealogies give John's full name as "John Butcher Dyment" but there is no evidence for the middle name in census or death records. He had a cousin of about the same age who was christened with this name.
