Narrative
It is believed that a Hugh McArthur Sr. came to Prince Edward Island on the Annabella in 1770, and that many of the McArthur families in Prince County are his descendants.
There were three Hugh McArthurs - one in Lot 16, one in Lot 13, and one In Lot 14. I am placing Hugh with this branch of the family because he named his first son Alexander, and his eldest daughter Catherine. He also signed a deed for land in Lot 14 that was adjacent to that of Dugal McArthur, in 1815, and near that of Alexander McArthur.
He was probably the Hugh McArthur from Lot 14 son of Alexander who was born 1791, and baptized in 1837.
There was a will for an Alexander McArthur, Lot 14, signed on 9 July 1839 but proved in 1870 - it seemed to be attached to the will of a younger Alexander McArthur, also of Lot 14. Named in this will, in this order, were Dugald, Hugh, James, Alexander, Archibald, Robert, Mary, Jane, Flora, Elizabeth, and Neil. Most of the children received one shilling, and Neil (Neile) inherited the farm. George and Thomas Lee were executors. PEI Probate Records, Wills not recorded," A-M, McA (misc. dates between 1786?-1930?), on familysearch.org Film # 008700579, image 917
Catherine McKay McArthur's gravestone said she was survived by 9 children. Gravestone in Oyster Point - "Sacred to the memory of Catherine McArthur, wife of Alexander McArthur, who departed this life 27th of December 1807, age 37 years. Leaving a husband and 9 children."
Hugh and Dugald McArthur signed an indenture and release related to land in Lot 14 with the landlord John Cambridge on the same date in 1815. There were two adjacent properties on the Ellis (or Grand) River. Since Hugh had to have been at least 21 by 1815, and since he was living near Dugald, I am assuming that Alexander's son was the Hugh McArthur in Lot 14, not the Hugh in Lot 13. (Land Conveyance vol 24, pgs 286 and 288, familysearch Film # 008309093, image 396 )
Hugh was married at least twice, to Nancy Ramsay and Margaret (Peggy) Murray. No marriage records have been found, but the mothers' names were on baptismal records. It seems unlikely from the dates of birth of Hugh McArthur's children that he was also the Hugh McArthur from Lot 16 who married Betsey McLaughlin. We also know that his son Alexander McArthur had a half brother William.
The names of Hugh's children, listed in Climbing the Hill, were Alexander, George, William, Hugh, Catherine, Margaret and Maria. A McArthur family history also proposed the following: David and Malcolm (no dates), Nellie, John, Donald, and Elizabeth (1828-1917). Some early family tree proposed names that they believed should be there, because of early naming patterns - there are so few records it is hard to say if they are correct in dong this. However, none of these proposed children signed the land agreement in 1859, and the son Donald who is in the PEI Baptismal Index must have died before 1859. I've only seen a transcription of Donald's baptismal record, and it is possible he was called David, after Peggy's father.
Hugh was said to have died 16 November 1854. He died without a will, and in 1859, his widow Margaret and seven children (Alexander and wife Elizabeth of Lot 14; Hugh; George and wife Ruth in New Brunswick; William and wife Rebecca of Lot 14; Catherine, Margaret the younger, and Maria) signed an injunction related to land in Lot 14. Catherine, Margaret and Maria were all single women in 1859. There are two documents related to this in the Land Conveyance Records, vol 78 page 4 and page 6.
Broken stone in Birch Hill Presbyterian Cemetery, Lot 14 "Hugh McArthur died Nov 16 1854, age 63".
Although some of the local PEI histories are not always accurate, Climbing the Hill has stood up to more extensive research.
