Narrative

Martha Jago was said to have arrived on Prince Edward Island from Plymouth England in 1828. A member of a sect called the Brienites, she was known for preaching on corners and in schools. The newspaper PEI Register said of her, "Among the marvels of the week, one not the least remarkable is the advent of a Female Preacher, who hs been holding forth to crowded and we have reason to think, admiring audiences...She mounted the pulpit with the greatest composure..."

In 1830, she married Henry Sabine. "Married this morning by the Rev. Louis C.
Jenkins, Mr. Henry Sabine of Three Rivers to Miss Martha Jago, the celebrated female preacher." (Register. Mar. 30,1830, from Georgetown Genealogical Resources vol1)

Martha later joined the Bible Christian Church, a sect of Methodism from Devon England that was taking hold on the Island. Unlike some other faiths at the time, the Bible Christians welcomed female preachers.

D." In Charlottetown, on the 15th ult, after a painful illness of three weeks. Martha Jago, relict of Henry
Sabine, in the 67th year of her age. Deceased was a native of Cornwall, England and emigrated to this Island
about the year 1828. She was highly esteemed by all who knew her for her exemplary Christian Character. She died
in the full assurance of a glorious immortality.
