Narrative

Theresa Jane was born June 23 1856, the eldest child of William Mann Jr. and Janet Johnstone. The name is an unusual one in these two families.

When Theresa Mann was ten years old, her mother died. Two years later, her father married again, to Mary Fraser.

Theresa married Hugh Fraser, the son of William Fraser and Ann McGlinn, and her step-mother's brother. Hugh's father, who was also a carpenter, and William Mann Sr. were said to be friends who emigrated to Prince Edward Island from Scotland together, sometime before 1830; this seems unlikely - Hugh's older sister Mary Fraser was born in Scotland after the Manns had already settled in the Irishtown area.

That the families were close can been seen from the PEI census records, where Frasers and Manns took care of each others' children. In obituaries, no distinction was made between full and half-siblings.

I was unable to find a marriage license or record for Theresa and Hugh, but on April 3 1876 Hugh, a farmer from Lot 15, made an application for a marriage bond. He was a bachelor and Theresa a spinster from Irishtown. The bond was co-signed by Benjamin Weatherbe, an innkeeper in St. Eleanor's.

Theresa and Hugh had five children. Sometime after the birth of her last child, Theresa became ill. In her obituary, this is termed a lingering illness. She died in 1893 at the age of 36. Her sister, Bessie Amanda, was listed in the 1891 census as living with with Theresa and Hugh - she perhaps came to help with the children and stayed to take care of her sister. According to family members and her obituary, Bessie is said to have raised her sister's children until Hugh Fraser moved to the United States. Three of Theresa's sons moved to Alberta, and her surviving daughter stayed in the United States.

From census records, Hugh Fraser was born sometime between 1839 and 1841 in Prince Edward Island. He immigrated to the United States in 1899, where he was later joined by his daughter Laura and son Leslie. He died in 1915 in New Hampshire at the age of 76.

Most of the information on Theresa came from notes given to Wanda Mann Dyment by her cousin, Elaine Burbank Richards, a descendant of Theresa Mann. Some parts were verified in Canadian and US census records, the Burlington history (page 182, but it has Theresa surviving Hugh), and the PEI Baptism Database.

The gravestone for Hugh and Theresa was erected at Geddie Memorial by descendants.
