Narrative

Watson Edward was the youngest son of John Dyment and Harriet Cotton, born in Lot 13, PEI between 1869-1871. He is not in the PEI Baptismal Index, and some Dyment genealogies have him as two sons, Edward, b. 1871 and Watson, b. 1874, or give him the name Watson Peter. However, only one son with this name, Edward Watson, was named in John's will, and no record with the name Peter Dyment has been found. If there had been two sons, both should have been in the 1881 census. According to his death record he was born in 1869 and died at the age of 73, the son of John Dyment, no mother's name given (information provided by his son Stirling).

Edward Dyment was in the 1881 census with the family of John and Harriet, where the household consisted of: John Dyment age 53, Harriet age 53, Thomas age 25, Annie Laura age 22, John Clark age 20, Margaret A. age 18, Elenor T. (Eleanor Gorrill) age 16, Harriot Marie (Harriet Maud) age 14, and Edward W.(Edward Watson) age 12 (born 1869 or 1870). Some of these ages don't match other records, and it looks like Eleanor should have been 14, Harriet Maud 13, and Edward Watson perhaps 10. I was unable to find Watson in the 1891 census. If he had gone to the States, as so many Islanders did, then he could have been in the now unavailable 1890 US census.

According to the Daily Examiner (September 17 1896, page 2), Watson married Elisabeth McAuslane in September 1896 in Tyne Valley. Their marriage license dated September 9 1896 was filed under Diamond Watson in PEI Archives. Watson Diamond of Tyne Valley married Elizabeth McAuslin from the same place on September 14 1896 in Summerside by the Rev. E. M. Dill, a Presbyterian minister. Archibald McAuslin was a witness. The actual marriage license gave his name as Watson Dyment from Tyne Valley, but he signed his name as "Watson Diamond".

In the 1901 census, Watson's date of birth was given as August 3 1871; in the 1911 census it was May 10 1876, although the written May could also be read as Aug, and the 6 could have been a transcription error by the census taker. On his gravestone, his dates were given as August 20 1871 to December 17 1942. A Mackinnon family tree gives the date as 3 May 1871. The change in date from May to August is worrying, unless it is a mistake by the census taker, or a baptismal date mixed up with a birth date.

Children born to Edward and Elizabeth Dyment in Northam, from the PEI Baptismal Index were Edgar Crawford, 17 January 1896; Winnie May, 30 Oct 1899; Sarah Nettie, 17 Nov 1901; and Hensley H. 14 March 1906. Children born to Watson Dyment and Elizabeth McAusland in Northam were Lawrence Bayfield, 12 July 1914 and Stirling Eugene, 1 May 1917. The children living with Watson E. and Elizabeth Dyment's family in the 1911 census were Edgar (Jan 1896), Winnie (Oct 1899), Nettie (Nov 1901), Watson (March 1906), and Gladys (April 1908). In 1921, the census for Mount Pleasant, PEI shows Watson (born 1874) and Elizabeth (born 1876) living with Edgar (24), Hudson (15), Gladys (12); Lawrence (6) and Sterling (3). There were 7 children listed for Watson Edward Dyment and his wife Elizabeth McAusland in the 1928 Cummings Atlas of PEI.

All of this indicates that John and Harriet only had one son named Watson Edward.

Watson was a carpenter. He occasionally went to find work in the United States.

Elizabeth's date of birth was December 8, 1878 in the 1901 census, and December 1, 1875 in the 1911 census (although her age is given as 58). She was 5 years old in the 1881 census (1875/76). On her tombstone, her dates were December 1 1875 to December 14 1957.
