Narrative

Moses was born around 1830 in Devon, England, the son of Humphrey Dyment, Sr. and Mary Ashton. No baptismal record was found for Moses. He would have been a toddler when his family emigrated in 1832. He and Maria Ellen Briant (Bryant) , the daughter of William Patricious Bryant and Maria Coughlan, were married by George Meggison, a Justice of the Peace on 17 August 1853. Witnesses were William Carroll and Nathan Ramsay. Maria was born in New Brunswick.

In the 1861 census, Moses was farming in Welford, Kent, New Brunswick with Maria and four children. Their eldest, Robert (age 6), was born on Prince Edward Island, but Mary (age 5), John (2), and Sophia Jane (10 months) were born in New Brunswick. This puts their move to New Brunswick around 1856. Moses' place of birth was written as Bradbury, England. Sons David (1863) and Humphrey (1865) were also born in New Brunswick. However, the birthplace for all of the children was sometimes recorded as PEI.

Three of their children are in the PEI Baptismal Index (Humphrey, Maria Eleanor, and Robert). They were baptized in O'Leary, two by a Bible Christian preacher. No place of birth is given, but Humphrey and David usually gave New Brunswick as their birthplace.

Moses is not in the 1871 census of New Brunswick. The farm he owned on the Western Road in the 1880 Meacham's Atlas was not under his name in the 1875 Anderson survey or on a map of Lot 13 dated 1878. However, he was in John Yeo's ledger, with an entry dated 1873.

Definitely, by the time of the 1881 Census, the family was back on Prince Edward Island on a farm on the Western Road in Lot 13. The household consisted of: Moses Dyment, age 51, Maria age 51, Robert 26, Mary 24, John 22, Jane 20, David 18, Humphrey 16, Eleanor 14, Elizabeth G. 12, Charles William 10, Martha J. 8, and Jessie M. 6. The entry before them in the census was for Thomas Dyment, Moses' nephew.

In the 1891 census, Charles (20), Martha (18) and Jessie (16) were single and living at home. Sophia Jane (28) and her husband Charles Alexander Day (25) were married and living with her parents and their one year old son Theodore.

Robert, Mary, Sophia Jane, Jessie and Humphrey settled in the New England States, and John, Charles and Martha in Washington State. David remained on the Island.

Moses died 20 Aug 1893, at the age of 63, and was buried in the United Church Cemetery, Bideford, P.E.I. "In memory of Moses Dyment died August 20 1893 at 64." The notice in the Summerside Journal Oct 4, 1893 said he left 5 sons and 6 daughters.

Maria went to the US the same year. In 1900, Maria stated on the US census form that she was the mother of 11 children, all living. In a 1902 Massachusetts City Directory, Maria E, widow of Moses, was living at 5 Evelyn Place in Malden. By 1910, Maria was living with her daughter Jessie in Massachusetts. After Jessie's death, Maria moved. In a 1913 directory, she was again in Malden. She died in Danville, New Hampshire in 1917, probably at the home of her daughter Sophia Jane.

See also the Bryant family on The Island Register. Some of Maria's brothers and sisters married into local families connected to the Dyment, such as the McArthurs, and their families can be found on McArthur listings.
