Narrative

Bernard was born on December 12 1852, the son of William Paynter and Matilda Mann. He married Serena Alice (Alice) Wickett, the daughter of Mary Ann Dyment and Henry Wickett, in 1878.

They had at least 10 children: Mary Jane (1879-1970), Matilda Alice (1881-1960), Hannah Elizabeth (1883-1967), Elenor Maria (1885-1960), Lewis William (1887-1951, Nellie (1891-1921), Fannie Marie (1892-1964), Thomas Andrew(1896-1979), Roy Edmund (1900-1979) and Minnie Pearl (1903-1989).

There were two Bernard Paynters living in PEI in the late 1880s. In the 1881 census, Bernard Painter, age 27, was a farmer living with his wife Alice and children Mary Jane and Matilda A, and Sophie Wickett. The other Bernard was age 22, living with his parents Margaret and John (Bernard Alexander Paynter, born in 1858). It seems likely that the son of William and Matilda Paynter is the Bernard Paynter who married Serena Alice Wickett in 1878.

In 1891, we find Bernard Poynter (33) and wife Alice with 6 children in Lot 20. His occupation is given as blacksmith. The family was Church of England. Household members were Bernard (33), Alice (31), Mary J (13), Alice M (11), Hannah (9), Ellenor (6), Lewis (3), and Nettie (1). All had been born on the Island.

In the 1900 US Census, Bernard and Alice were living in Penosbsot Maine with 4 of their children, William L.(Lewis), Nettie, Fanny and Thomas, all born on the Island. Roy was born later that year in Maine. They were back on the Island by 1911. Bernard was a blacksmith. Daughters Nettie, Hannah, and Eleanor married in the States.

Bernard Paynter died in Clinton in September 1940, aged 88 (Maple Leaf page 171 October 1940).

Some of the information on the Paynter and Wickett families came from the Wickett Family History with some related families by Henry L. Laskey and Linwood B. Wickett August 2002.
