Narrative

"John Maynard emigrated from Kilkhampton to P.E.I. in 1842 on the vessel British Lady with his twin brother, William. He settled at St. Eleanor's, Lot 17 for four years, under the employ of Thomas Broad, before moving to Lot 13 where he subsequently managed the farm of James Yeo", from A Century of Farewells.

He married Flora McLean in 1853. Many of the birth/marriage records for John Maynard and his brother William were under Minyard, Myard, or Menyard in the PEI Baptismal Index. There were 9 children for John and Flora under Meynard. This was the same spelling used in census records, where John Menyard had a household of 7 in the 1861 census. There were 3 boys under 5, one girl under 5 and one over 5, and a married couple.

The family name was recorded as Mynard in the 1881 census of Lot 13:
John Mynard M 61y England, Flora Mynard F 50y Prince Edward Island, Catherine Mynard F 26y Prince Edward Island, William D. Mynard M 22y Prince Edward Island, John Hugh Mynard M 21y Prince Edward Island, Thomas H. Mynard M 19y Prince Edward Island, James H. Mynard M 17y Prince Edward Island, Edmund Mynard M 15y Prince Edward Island, Margaret J. Mynard F 13y Prince Edward Island, Charles A. Mynard M 11y Prince Edward Island, Minnie Ida Mynard F 9y Prince Edward Island and Arthur F. Mynard M 7y Prince Edward Island.

In 1891, Edmund (26), Jane (23), Charles (21), Minnie (19), Arthur (16) and Lilly (7) were living at home. Lilly was baptized as the daughter of their eldest daughter Catherine, but was raised as Flora's daughter.

"The death of Mr. John Maynard Sr. of Port Hill which occurred at his home yesterday morning removes one of Prince County's oldest landmarks and one of its most highly respected residents, after an illness of about five months, during the last few weeks of which he was confined to his bed awaiting his rest with the calmness and trust that characterized his life. He passed peacefully away at the age of eighty years. Mr. Maynard was born at Kilkhampton Cornwall on December 25 1819. He immigrated to PEI in May 1842. St.Eleanors, where he remained four years. He afterwards engaged with the late Mr. James Yeo of Port Hill as head farmer at a salary of two pounds per month, a position which he held for seven years.
From this small beginning, he was able by industry-and economy to accumulate considerable property, having at the time of his death, about 475 acres of prime land, on which four of his sons are now comfortably settled. On the 6th of December 1853 he married Miss Florence McLean, daughter of the late Mr. Hugh McLean of Port Hill, who with twelve children, five daughters and seven sons, survive him. With the exception of two sons and a daughter in the United States the family is settled in Port Hill and Northam. Mr. Maynard was a prominent Mason, having been for 32 years a member of Alexandra Lodge.being treasurer of the institution during the past twelve years. He was in every way a useful member of the community, active in all that tended to its welfare socially and morally, and the blank caused by his death will not soon be filled."
The Morning Guardian March 20, 1900 page 6

In an interview with Jennie Pearl Maynard McLean, she said her grandfather died of cancer. He went to Boston where two of his daughters lived, but the doctors there couldn't do anything for him and he came back to the Island.
