Narrative

Mary Jane Dyment was not in the PEI Baptismal Index. However, in his will, John Dyment named his daughter Mary Jane, the wife of James Gass. Mary Jane gave her date of birth as 9 November 1855 in the 1901 PEI census, but gave a different month in 1911. She was named for her two grandmothers, Mary Ashton and Jane Grant.

In PEI Marriages 1871-1878, page 271: Mary Jane Dyment was married to James Gass by Wm H. Hopwood, Justice of the Peace. The record is incomplete, with no date of marriage or witness names recorded. The marriage was not registered until November 1876. There was a marriage bond taken out by Mr. John Dyment of Lot 13, farmer, and James Gass, lot 30, farmer on 7 June 1876. The bond was for James Gass, bachelor, and Mary Jane Dyment, lot 13, spinster.

There were two people named Mary Gass, married to a James Gass, in the 1881 PEI census. One (Mary) was 29 and living in Summerside; the other (Mary Jane) was 26 and living in Lot 30. Her two children were John (5) and Thomas (3). There were five children for James Gass and Mary J. in the PEI Baptismal Index: Maud, James, John Andrew, Sanford and Thomas. Maud Gass, born in PEI, gave her parent's names as James Gass and Mary Diamond on her marriage record in Massachusetts, as did Thomas Gass. Therefore, the couple in Lot 30 seems to be the the right one. Some of the children were baptized in the Hampton (United) Church, and some of them were born on the Appin Road in that lot.

In the 1891 census, Lot 30: James Gass (35) and Mary Jane (age 37) had children John Andrew (14), Thomas (13), Maud (9), James (6), Sarah (4), Maggie L (3) and Daniel (under 1). They lived in a wood house, one story, with 3 rooms. All were Bible Christians. James was a farmer.

In the 1911 census: James and Mary, with children Daniel (June 1890), Sanford (November 1894), Vernon (November 1897), and Hattie (November 1899). Several of their children went to the States.

No death or cemetery record has been found for Mary Jane, and the Maria Dyment who died in Prince County in 1905 was her cousin, Maria Dyment McDonald. Her daughters Margaret and Hattie inserted an In Memoriam notice in the Charlottetown Guardian on Wednesday October 6, 1948, page 3. "In ever loving memory of our dear mother MRS. MARY JANE GASS Who passed away Sept. 21 1919."

James gave his status as widower on the record for his second marriage, in October 1920. James Gass, age 60, was living next to Daniel and Elva Gass with his second wife and a four year old daughter, Ella Ledona, according to the 1921 census.

There was a record in the Cornwall Church for the sudden death of James Gass in 1921 (James T Gass, Appin Road, age 67 October 25 1921).

Children who went to the States were John Andrew, Thomas, Maud, Margaret, Sarah Alice and Ada Mae. The Cummins PEI Atlas (1928) has a Daniel Gass, Mrs. James Gass, and Sanford Gass living on the Appin Road in Lot 30.

In 1922, Ella May Gass, administratrix of the estate of James T. Gass, sued Daniel Gass for items from the estate: a 10 year old horse, a McLaughlin driving waggon, a second hand sleigh, sleigh, hay mower, tooth harrow, two tons hay, twenty bushels potatoes, 5 bushels oats, one set driving harness, one fur robe, two carriage wraps, one parlour suite, one kitchen table, two chairs, one iron bed and mattress, two bed ticks, four quilts, one flannel blanket, one cooking stove, pots and pans, mats, personal clothing, one gold watch, five pictures, two looking glasses. dishes, bucket, dippers, lantern, wash stand, bottles, suitcases, shovel, axe, and quantity of dishes in trunk.
