Narrative

Spurgeon (Spurd) was born on 31 August 1910 in Northam, the son of James Dyment, and Laura Belle McArthur. He married Viola Pearl Ramsay of Mount Pleasant on 17 August 1927. Pearl was born on 19 August 1908, the daughter of Arthur Carr Ramsay and Susan Penwarden.

Spurd bought his brother Ned's farm in the 1930s. He and Pearl raised six children, and also provided a home for several grandchildren.

Pearl was a Sunday School teacher and an active member of the United Church Women and the Women's Institute, which both honoured her with life memberships. She was also a founding member of the Stewart Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was known in the community for her crafts and paintings.

They retired from farming in 1991, and moved to Tyne Valley.

Spurd died on 27 April 1994 at the Stewart Memorial Hospital in Tyne Valley at the age of 83 years. Pearl died on 28 April 1997 at the age of 88 years.

The death occurred at the Stewart Memorial Hospital, Tyne Valley on Wednesday, April 27, 1994 of A. Spurgeon Dyment, beloved husband of Pearl (nee Ramsay) of Tyne Valley and formerly of Northam at the age of 83 years. Son of the late James and Laura Belle (MacArthur) Dyment. He was a member of the Tyne Valley United Church and a retired farmer.

Besides his wife Pearl he leaves to mourn two daughters and one son: Ethel, Mrs. John H. Newitt; George and his wife Jean Dyment; Norma and her husband Elmer Ramsay, all of Northam; as well as 27 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by a brother, C. Roy Dyment and his wife Murle, Hilton, New York. He was predeceased by sons Edgar in 1992, Harold and Ralph in infancy, a granddaughter Caylene and seven brothers and four sisters: Wilfred, Herman, Rev. Hatfield, Russell, Clifford, Edward, William, Laura, Annie, Ethel and Eleanor.
Resting at Ferguson's Tyne Valley Funeral Chapel until Saturday morning, then to Tyne Valley United Church for funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Wilson officiating. Interment in the church cemetery.
