Narrative

Susan Ann Dymont, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth, was born on 26 September 1864, and baptized in O'Leary in the Bible Christian chapel on 8 October 1864. She was possibly named for her aunt, Susanna Ashton Dyment. Susan was in the household headed by Levi Dyment and her mother Elizabeth Dyment, a widow, in the 1881 census in Lot 13.

She attended the local school, and completed two years of elementary school.

She married John Shea, son of Michael and Julia, in Cambridge, Massachusetts 13 Dec 1889, when she said she was 22 (born 1867).

After this date, Susan's life was a mystery. Her mother's obituary said she was survived by two sons and four daughters - was the family only counting the 4 daughters living on the Island?

There was a Susan Ann Dyment, age 36, who married Charles Hodgdon, age 26, in Maine in 1910. The bride was born in PEI, and her father was Charles J. Dyment, born in England and deceased, mother Elizabeth McLane, born on PEI and also deceased. Both bride and groom claimed that it was their first marriage. I wasn't able to find another Susan Dyment or Diamond, father Charles, in the PEI Baptismal Index or in the 1881 census. If this is her, then she shaved 10 years off her age as well as a previous marriage, and mixed up her mother's maiden name with her grandmother's.

The more I look at this record, the more I am convinced that it was her.

This could be Susan Annie in the 1910 US census, although not everything fits. She was 10 years older than her husband, and they had been married one year, but instead of Canada her birthplace was Maine:

Name: Charles Hodgedon
Event Place: Saco Ward 6, York, Maine
Birthplace: Maine
Father's Birthplace: Maine
Mother's Birthplace: Maine
SELF Charles Hodgedon M 26y Maine
WIFE Annie Hodgedon F 38y Maine

I couldn't find another record for Charles or Annie Hodgedon after this one. Given his age, I might have expected to see Charles Hodgdon in either the WW1 or WW2 registration records.

There were three different versions of the obituary for her sister Eleanor Dyment Reeves. There are always four sisters: in one they are Mrs. Rodman, Mrs. Cudmore, Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Campbell; in another the first three are the same and the last one was updated from Campbell to Mrs. Farwell; in the third obituary the first sister is Mrs. (Dr) George Rodman of Boston. It is possible that the newspaper obituaries got the name wrong - Rodman/Hodgdon. However, Charles Hodgdon was not a doctor or a dentist. I was unable to find a Dr. George Rodman in Massachusetts in the 1921 American Medical Directory, and none of the Susan or Ann Rodmans found in Massachusetts census records or directories match her.

There was a Susanna A. Dyment, a widow with adopted son Paul Williams, age 12, in the 1930 New Hampshire census. This Susan emigrated in 1890, and said that both of her parents were born on the Island. Paul Henry William was born in Everett, Mass, the son of Charles Williams and Effie Hammond. Charles and Effie don't seem to have a link to the Dyments or PEI. However, although the date of birth is off, I think this Eli Dyment's widow.

In the 1940 US census, Annie L. Johnson was living in Cambridge Mass with her niece Eleanor B. Bennett, her younger sister Jennie's daughter. Annie indicated that she had been in Cambridge in 1935. Annie was not the Annie married to Harry S. Johnson, or Annie, the widow of Edward, or Annie the widow of Joseph E. Johnson, all in Cambridge Mass in the 1930s.

Annie L. Johnson, daughter of Charles Diamond and Elizabeth McDougle died in Cambridge on February 16 1949 at the age of 80.
