Maynard, Maurice Bayfield

Birth Name Maynard, Maurice Bayfield
Gender male

Narrative

Maurice was born in 1884, and was baptized as the son of Alice Yeo, housekeeper in Port Hill Church of England in 1893. In the 1891 census, Alice and Maurice Yeo (age 7) were living with her widowed mother, Elizabeth Maynard, in Lot 13.

Alice married John Maynard Jr. after the death of his first wife, a cousin of hers, and Maurice was afterwards known as Maurice Maynard.

Maurice's stories are sprinkled throughout the book Climbing the Hill - he especially seemed to like teasing more serious farmers, like Thomas Birch. (Climbing the Hill, page 21, 32, 42, 45, 54, 78)

"Port Hill Station is located about four miles from Port Hill. "Why would they put Port Hill Station so far from Port Hill?" inquired the tourist. "I suppose they wanted it close to the railroad," said Maurice."

"Maurice was a fisherman by trade, as well as a salesman. He will long be remembered for his keen and ready wit and responsive sense of humour. Maurice married Ethel Enman and they had ten children: Reginald, Irene, Collingwood, Austin, Ralph, Raymond (1912-1913), Percy Waldo (1921-1930), Lorna Evelyn, Alton Lloyd, Elga Jean."
