Narrative

Johnstone Mann was born 15 November 1859, the second son of William Mann Jr. and Janet Johnstone. He was named after his maternal grandfather.

After his father's death, Johnstone lived with one of his uncles, but by 1891 he was back at home. On February 22 1892, William Johnstone Mann from New London, a bachelor, married Elizabeth McFadyen, a spinster from Kingston, PEI. They were married in Zion Presbyterian Church in Charlottetown by the Rev. David Sutherland. Bessie A. Mann and John A. McFadyen were witnesses.

They had 6 children, the first, Leslie Archibald, being born in Kingston, PEI in September 1892 and baptized in Cornwall in 1893. Their second son, Andrew Robertson, was baptized in Kensington in 1895, and by the time the twins Allison and Johnstone were born in 1901 they were residing in Irishtown. Family names must have been important to Elizabeth, since these were often combined with names that were new to the family: Leslie Archibald, for her father Archibald McFadyen; Andrew Robertson, after her maternal grandmother Jane Robertson and her younger brother Robertson McFadyen; William Kier, named after a well-known local doctor who married Johnstone's cousin Barbara; Allison Beer for her maternal grandfather (Thomas Beer); Johnstone Angus for the Johnstone family and Angus after Archibald McFadyen's father; and Hazel Elizabeth after herself.

In the 1901 census, William J Mann, age 41 was a farmer in Lot 20 with wife Elizabeth (31) and children Leslie (8), Robertson (6), Keir (5), Johnstone (1), Allison (1) and Hazel (4 months).

Johnstone Mann died on April 16 1901 at the age of 41, leaving his widow with six children under the age of 8. Hazel Elizabeth and the twins, Allison and Johnstone, were all baptized on the same day in April 1901 in the Kensington Presbyterian Church. The PEI Baptismal Index says April 18 or 19, which would be right after Johnstone's death. Johnstone died without a will, so it is possible that Elizabeth needed documentation for all of their children. Andrew Johnstone, John McFadyen and Elizabeth Mann signed the administration papers for the estate of William Mann. The inventory included 105 acres of land, valued at $1500; 4 milk cows, 6 young cattle, 2 mares, 1 colt, some pigs and a sheep, along with some farming equipment, valued at $400.

Johnstone's obituary:
Again the death angel has made his appearance and taken from us one whose death has left a shade of sadness over the people of Irishtown. Mr. Johnstone Mann. His death has called forth the deepest sympathy of the whole community where he was respected and beloved as an honest quiet industrious man and a true Christian. About two months ago he contracted a severe cold but was thought to be recovering when he took a relapse and not withstanding all that medical skill and loving care and nursing could do he rapidly sank and on Wednesday evening gently and calmly fell into his last, long sleep. He leaves a wife and six small children, three brothers and two sisters to mourn the loss of a most loving husband, father, a kind brother and true friend. (Guardian April 25 1901)

In Burlington, Lot 18, on the 16ult., William J. Mann , age 41 years. Leaving a wife and six children. He was an honest, industrious, and hard working man and was highly respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. The funeral which was very largely attended took place on Thursday 18th at Long River Presbyterian Church.
Agriculturist, 4 May 1901, p.4 col.4-6

On his gravestone:
In heaven with joy we will meet again
Where no farewell tear is shed
