Narrative

John Andrew Mann was born in Burlington about 1857, the eldest son of William Mann and Janet Johnstone. He gave both May and February as his month of birth on census forms. John Andrew was possibly named after two of Janet's brothers, John and Andrew, who had died in 1851 and 1857.

In the 1901 census John was living alone; previously he had provided a home to his aunt, Mary Mann. According to the Irishtown history, From the Top of the Hill, he was the last person to live in the original Mann house on the Irishtown Road.

In 1888, John Mann was one of the witnesses called to testify in the locally-famous Mary Tuplin murder trial. He, John Nathanial Evans and the accused, William Millman, had been together the week before, when Millman had startled the others by firing his gun. It seems from his testimony that John then left the younger men in disgust.

John Andrew earned a diploma from the Charlottetown Commercial College in 1882, worked as a farmer and traded produce and livestock.

Bessie Underhill said that John Mann was the father of her daughter, Hattie Jane, born in 1894.

Charlottetown Guardian November 1900: "Mr. J. A. Mann, of Irishtown, who is one of the largest cattle dealers in the province has again gone west for another lot of some 40 or 50 cattle which he purposes taking to his farm in a few days. This stock consists of beef, milch and feeding cattle and will be disposed of at his farm."

John Andrew married later in life, in December 1902, possibly after the death of his aunt Mary.

Mann, John A. of Burlington m. 17 December 1902 Eliza Taylor of North Bedeque, PEI by Rev. W. H. Smith and R. S. Whidden. (Presbyterian Witness 27 Dec 1902 pg 46)

In 1903, the Summerside Journal noted that John A. Mann had returned from a seven week honeymoon in Nova Scotia with his wife, the former Eliza Taylor of Bedeque. According to the local paper, "Mr. John A. Mann, Burlington, was in town Saturday. He and Mrs. Mann were detained on the Minto some days ago for over a week while on their way home from Nova Scotia, where they had spent a honeymoon of six or seven weeks. After several day's close observation Mr. Mann thinks that the Minto is a very good ship, but in his opinion she has not sufficient power to do the best work in heavy ice."

Eliza was the daughter of Donald and Jennet Taylor of Bedeque, born in 1853 (although she made herself a few years younger in most census forms).

In the 1911 census, John and his wife were living in Lot 25 with her brother and mother. John gave his occupation as trader, and his religion as Presbyterian. They moved to Summerside in 1912, where they lived in the James Campbell house at 270 Central Street.

A picture of the house can be seen at http://www.historicplaces.ca/en/rep-reg/place-lieu.aspx?id=16208
"In 1911, John Andrew Mann purchased the house from Mr. Strong and the lot on which it stood... He was a son of William and Janet Mann of Burlington, PEI, where he farmed for many years before his marriage to Eliza Taylor of North Bedeque in 1902. Mrs. Mann died in 1927 and Mr. Mann deeded the house to his sister Bessie. Bessie MacEachern, a widow, lived in Covehead for many years before coming to Summerside with her daughter, Jean, to live with her brother. In 1931, she sold a strip of land on the west side of the property to Allan W. Palmer who built a home on the 65 foot wide lot. Her brother, John Mann, died in 1932 and she sold the property in 1936."

According to her obituary in a local Summerside paper, Eliza died in 1927 after a fall in her home. Two years later, John's widowed sister Bessie and niece Jean moved to Summerside to live with him. He died in 1932 at the age of 74. His death record gave his parents names as William Mann and Jennett Johnston.

John and Eliza were buried in the North Bedeque Presbyterian/United Cemetery.
