Daughter of James French and Elizabeth Wiggins (b. 1848). Elizabeth French was a widow in 1901.

After Arthur's death, Gertrude went to Massachusetts where she married Bert Hammell from Ohio. Gertrude called herself by her middel name, Helen after her marriage to Bert, and shaved 5 years off her age. In 1920, Bert and Helen Hamil were in Boston with Mabel (16) and Addie (12).

Gertrude Helen and Bert moved to Ohio. They had a daughter Shirley. In 1930, none of the Ramsay children were living with their mother.

Gertrude was buried as Helen G. Hammell (1888-1932).
