Henry J. W. Barlow was born on May 17 1888, the son of Mary Eleanor Dyment and John Archibald Barlow. He emigrated to the United States in 1905 with his brother Spurgeon, and in the 1910 census the brothers were living in Massachusetts with Mary Eleanor's sister Elizabeth and her husband Henry Williams.
Henry married Margaret McCabe, born in Reading Massachusetts, in 1910; the couple had at least nine children. Their first set of twins, born in 1912 in Massachusetts, were stillborn. Henry registered for the first world war in Springfield Mass. in 1917/18. At that time he had a wife and two children and was working as a pressman.
In 1920, Henry and Margaret were living in South Dakota with four children: Henry (5), Robert (3) and twins Dorothy and Herbert (1). All four children were born in Massachusetts. Information in the South Dakota Census of 1925 matches: Henry J. Barlow was born in 1889 in Prince Edward Island. He was a pressman/printer and had married in 1910. In 1930, Henry was living with the two older boys in Aberdeen South Dakota. His status was single. In the same census, Margaret Barlow was divorced and living in Sioux City with the twins Dorothy F and Hubert A (11), Dorris M Barlow (10) Margaret R Barlow (5), George E Barlow ( 2). Also in the household was Guy Hauck, age 28.
Henry had remarried in 1935 (South Dakota census of 1945). The only other Barlow in Aberdeen, Brown, South Dakota was Myrtle, b. in Iowa. She was 63, and had also married in 1935. They were at the same address in 1945, at 6078 Main St. Aberdeen, Brown. In 1940, Henry Barlow and his wife Myrtle were on their own, living in Ward 5, Aberdeen, Aberdeen City, South Dakota. Henry was a labourer with a construction company. In the south Dakota census of 1945, Henry gave his occupation as drill pressman. He gave the maiden name of his wife Myrtle as "Self".
Around 1935, his ex-wife and new husband had moved to El Reno, Oklahoma. Their son Henry married there in 1936. By the time of the 1940 US census, at least three of his children - Herbert, Dorothy and Doris - were on their own and living in El Reno, Oklahoma. Margaret and George were living with their mother and step-father in Alabama.
In his father's obituary (1948), Henry was said to be living in Iowa. Myrtle Edith Barlow, b. Decorah Iowa died 3/30/1950 and was buried in Riverside and Riverside Memorial Cemetery, Aberdeen, Brown County, SD. Henry's son Robert Archibald died in Texas in 1952. In 1960, Henry visited his sisters in PEI; his address was given as Oklahoma.
BARLOW, HENRY was born 17 May 1888; received Social Security number which corresponds to South Dakota; and died February 1963. His half-brother Clayton received word that Henry had died February 1963.
