The Rev. William Stuart was the son of Rev. Alexander Stuart, minister of Laurencetown, Nova Scotia, whose family was from Aberdeen, Scotland. Rev. William Stuart was graduated from the Free Church College and Hall, Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 17, 1865. On October 30, 1866, he married Elizabeth Ramsay.
His first pastorate was in the West Point, Brae, and Campbellton, Prince Edward Island from May 17, 1865 to 1870. He was ordained and inducted in West Point, Prince Edward Island on May 17, 1865. He was inducted in Fredericton, New Brunswick on December 21, 1870 and left on October 7, 1875.
