Catherine may have been living with one of the many McKendrick uncles or cousins who lived in Kent, New Brunswick.

In the obituaries for her sisters, Mrs. William Stevenson of Molus River was a surviving sister. This was Margaret, Katherine's younger sister. There doesn't seen to be any question that Margaret McLean married her brother in law, William Stevenson, and that her older sister Katherine was his first wife. Who else would give a son the middle name of McKendrick, and name a daughter after her aunt, Flora McLean Maynard? In the 1901 census, Margaret referred to the children of James Stevenson as nephew and niece, rather than step-grandchildren.

Unfortunately, the 1851 census for Kent was destroyed, so Catherine and William are first found in the 1861 census of Weldford, Kent, NB, with his father Thomas as the head of household.

By that time, their children were: Margaret Jane 11, Edward McKenzie 13, John 11, James McKendrick 9, Matharine (Marianna) Catherine 7, Flora 5, Susan Anderson 3, and Hugh McNeal 1.

Ten years later, according to the 1871 census, children at home were Edward M. (23), Margaret (21), James M. (19), Mary C. (17), Flora (15), Hugh W. (10), Annie B (8), Susan A (6), William B. (4), John Isaac (3) and Thomas (6 months).

Sometime after Katherine's death in 1873, William married her younger sister Margaret, but he was still a widower in the 1881 census. His father Thomas was 81, and still living at home were Edward (32) , Margaret (30), James (28) , M. Catherine (26), Flora (24), Annie (18), Hugh (19), A. Susan (15) and D. Gordon (10).

Katherine was buried in Kent, St Marks Presbyterian Bass River. The New Brunswick newspaper that recorded her death asked PEI newspapers to copy the announcement.
