McDougall, Hannah

Birth Name McDougall, Hannah
Gender female
Age at Death about 78 years, 9 months, 18 days

Narrative

Hannah was born 8 July 1835 in New Brunswick - give or take a year or two. She was with her parents in 1851, living in Northumberland County, Blissfield Parish, age 19. She was married to Edward Mallan by the time of the 1861 census (married 13 AUG 1859, according to one source). In this census, Hannah, age 28 was living with her husband and two daughters, Mary J. (10) and Elizabeth (4), as well as her parents.

No further trace was found of the family under the name Mallen, which was not a common NB surname. It is possible that her daughter Mary was in later census records with her (grand)parents under the name Mary McDougall.

The closest fit for this family was that of Edward Mullaley, spelled several ways, and his wife Hannah McDougall. They were in the 1871 census in Derby, Northumberland, under the name Molalley. Edward and Hannah were both age 34. They had a daughter Elizabeth, born 1859, a gap, and then Rebecca (1864), John T. (1865), Nancy J. (1868) and Patrick N. (1870).

Then in the 1881 census they were in South Esk, with Thomas (probably John Thomas, age 16), Rebecca (15); Nancy (12); Patrick (12); Margaret (7); Jonnah (6); Louisa (5) and Sarah (2).

In 1891, the family name was transcribed as Wallaly. At home were Johanna (born 1875), Patrick (1873), Sarah (1880), Nancy (1868), and Ann (1888). Hannah indicated on this census that her father had been born in PEI.

Edward may have died in 1898. Hannah Mullaley was a widow living with her son in Newcastle in 1901, and with her daughter Johanna in Maine in 1910.

Patrick married Ellen Dunn
Thomas married Ellen's sister, Margaret Dunne
Elizabeth m. Isaac McLean, died in Maine
Johanna m. John Albert Mullins, emigrated to Maine

The death record for Hannah Mullaly in Penobscot, Maine in 1911 gave her parent's names as Peter McDougal, a lumberman, and Hannah Vey. I am certain that this is the right Hannah McDougall.

The death of Mrs Hannah, widow of Edward Mullaly, formerly of Newcastle, NB occurred on Thursday night at the residence of her daughter Mrs Albert J Mullins [Johanna], 136 Fruit St. She is survived by 4 daughters, 2 sons, 2 brothers and 1 sister. Bangor Daily News 20 Oct 1911 pg 3
