Birth Name Dyment, Elizabeth L. 2a
Gender female
Age at Death 40 years, 1 month, 14 days

Narrative

Elizabeth L. Dyment was born in 1849, the daughter of William Dyment and Effie McArthur. She was married to Augustine Cain at the manse in Lot 7 on December 16 1868 by the Rev. W. Stewart with William Dyment as one of the witnesses. Although Elizabeth was not in the PEI Baptismal Index, having William as a witness, and living in Lot 7 would link her to this family - as well, she named one daughter Effie and was buried next to William and Effie. Her widower Augustine signed a land agreement with other members of William and Effie's family.

Summerside Progress: JAN. 18, 1869, MARRIED ON DECEMBER 16TH AT THE MANSE, SPRINGFIELD; AUGUSTINE CAIN TO ELIZABETH DYMONT/DYMENT?, BOTH OF LOT 7.

Five of her children were in the PEI Baptismal Index: Annie, Catherine, Charles, Effie May, and George. It looks like most of them were baptized after Elizabeth's death, on 6 May 1899 in West Cape, children of Mr. and Mrs. A. Cain. Priscilla Cane was baptized on 7 November 1889 in West Cape. Annie and Effa May's marriage records in Massachusetts give Elizabeth and Augustine as their parents.

In the 1881 census, Augustine, a plasterer, and Elizabeth (age 32) were living in Lot 8 with Priscilla (12), Catherine (10), Annie (8), William (6), John (4) and Charles (1). Elizabeth died 15 February 1889 at age 40. On the same gravestone was their daughter, Priscilla Cain, age 20, who died in December 1889.

Effie, her surviving children, and Augustine Cain signed a conveyance of the land originally purchased by William Dyment in 1877 to Elizabeth's brother George.

In 1891, Augustine Cane, a widower, was living with Annie (17), William (14), John (12), Charles (10), George (8), and Effie (6) in a one and a half story house with two rooms in Lot 8. The schoolteacher and another woman were boarding with the Cains.

Augustine remarried. In 1901, Elizabeth's children Charles (20), George (18), and William (26) were living with their father and his second wife, Caroline (last name Wood or Harris on baptismal records for their children). Effie was living with an older sister. By 1911, only Charles and George were at home and unmarried.

William went to Maine, and Annie and Effa Mae to Massachusetts.

Some family trees say she was called Liz - this seems unlikely. At the time, the most common nicknames for Elizabeth were Eliza, Lizzie, Betsy, or Bessie.
