Narrative
Elizabeth Ann was born 5 November 1863, and baptized as the daughter of Humphrey Dyment, Jr. and Nancy McDougall. (her gravestone said born 5 Dec 1863) She was living in Northam in 1881, with her parents, age 17. Elizabeth probably met Henry James Williams in Massachusetts, where they registered their intention to marry, so presumably she had gone to the States to find work. She and Henry, the son of John H. Williams and Annie M. Callahan, were married on 7 September 1887 in Tyne Valley. They returned to Massachusetts.
At the Baptist church, Tyne Valley, on Sept. 7 th , by the Rev. R. B. Kinley, Henry J. Williams, of Newton, Mass,
to Elizabeth Ann Dyment, daughter of Humphrey Dyment, Northam. Summerside Journal Sep 15, 1887
The attached photo of Humphrey Dyment has his son James behind him, and his daughter-in-law Laura Belle holding a baby. The other woman was said to to James' sister Nellie, but based on the ages of the children, the sister has to be Elizabeth. The photo would have been taken around the time she went to Massachusetts.
Elizabeth and Henry had had a daughter, Marjorie Elizabeth, who died at 7 months. In the 1900 US census, Henry and Elizabeth were living in Springfield, Massachusetts. They had been married 13 years, and had had one child, but not living. Henry, who had been a painter with his father at age 16, gave his occupation as chemist for a colouring company.
In 1910, Elizabeth Ann and Henry Williams were living in Massachusetts with their children Julian C. (age 7) and Alice A. (age 3); also living with them were nephews Spurgeon W. Barlow (age 24) and Henry J. W. Barlow (age 21). According to Uncle Dave's notes, Elizabeth and Henry adopted two girls, but Julian is a male in census records. From Massachusetts records, Julian and Alice were Henry Williams' nephew and niece, adopted by Henry and Elizabeth, probably after the death of their mother Alice in 1909.
In 1920, Julian was 16 and Alice 13.
They celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 1912. Mr and Mrs Henry J. Williams of 225 Belmont Avenue celebrated their silver wedding anniversary by receiving their friends...A large number including many members of the State Street Baptist church of which Mr and Mrs Williams are members paid their respects and offered their congratulations. Mr and Mrs Williams were married in Prince Edward's Island September 7 1887. The first year of their married life was spent in Newton but since they have made their home in Springfield. Mrs Williams is prominently identified with several church organizations. Mr Williams is prominent in Masonic circles. Springfield Sunday Union, September 8, 1912, page A7.
