Robert, 29, and Lydia, 30, were in New Brunswick for the 1851 census with Robert D. and Annie, 6 months.
This fits with the family in the 1871 census of Nova Scotia - Robert (38), Lydia (40), Robert (12), Anna (10), Theodore (3) and Jane (1). According to the record, everyone in the household was born in Nova Scotia.
In the 1881 census, the family was in Lot 10 PEI: Robert, 48, born PEI; Lydia Ann, 50, born New Brunswick; Annie, 20, born New Brunswick; Theodore 13, born NS and Jane 11, born NS. Also in the household is Robert Rogers, age 72, born NB.
Robert found work as a labourer and a carpenter.
The family was in Massachusetts, where Lydia, a widow, died in 1909. On census records, Robert and Lydia's children said they emigrated between 1882-1888. I wasn't able to find Lydia in the 1891 Canadian or the 1900 US census records. She was living in Malden in 1901, according to one daughter's marriage record.
This does make it more likely that Robert was the Robert McArthur, son of Malcolm and Ann, who died in Malden, Massachusetts in 1896. The record transcription said he was a single man at the time of his death, but the actual form indicated he had been married.
