Narrative

Daniel, son of John and Agnes (Humphrey), married Catherine Elliott in 1888.

From their children's birth records, it looks like Daniel and family went to Massachusetts (daughter May/Mary b. 1891 in Massachusetts - birth reported on same page as that of his brother Alexander's son John), and then on to New York where Helen was born. Alexander stayed in the States, and Daniel and Catherine were back on the Island by 1894.

In 1897, a man named Daniel Macdonald, who for some time kept a grocery store on Queen Street, near Sydney, went over Poole's Wharf, it was believed with suicidal intent. He was rescued by Mr. W. H. Batt and some truckmen. It is said that Macdonald has not been all right in his mind for several months past, and that than an application for his admission to the Hospital for the Insane was refused on the ground that there was no room for him in that institution. Macdonald lives on the Malpeque Road and has a wife and four children. It is said that worrying over financial matters caused his mind to become unsettled. Examiner July 31 1897 pg 3

This story fits with this Daniel. The family had a grocery story, and by 1897 they had 4 children; however, note that the name was a common one on the Island.

In 1901, Daniel was a plasterer and Catherine had a grocery store in Charlottetown.

Catherine said she was a widow in the 1911 census:

However, there was a Daniel McDonald of the right age in Falconwood Hospital in 1911 and 1921. Daniel, born 1862 and son of John, a Plasterer, died at Falconwood Hospital in 1942.

Catherine and the children went out West.
