Notes

Note

Most McDougall family trees place John Richard with the family of John and Ann McDougall. I have been unable to find any records that confirm this. However, I have placed John and his family here for convenience. I am finding some DNA connection to his descendants.

John was born on PEI around 1814, according to the 1881 census. He was a Presbyterian.

He was married at least twice, to Charlotte Tamar Purdy from New Brunswick and to Margaret Milligan in 1865.

A map dated 1851 shows two farms beside each under, under the name John McDougald. One was 71.5 acres - this was property A9/54 Folio 92. The property beside it was also John McDougall, 100 acres, and it looks like it says "leased 1807".

There was only one John Mcdougald (John McDugle) in Lot 16 in the 1861 census, with a household of 9, all Presbyterians. This included a married couple and 7 single people. Although 50 years had elapsed in the lease, the eldest male in the household was between 46-60, and the eldest female between 21-45. There were 5 males between 5-16 (Lewis, Allan, Henry, James, ?)and one between 16-21 (Robert Bruce). There was one female between 5-16 (Mary). There had been one marriage in the previous year (Elizabeth).

Although the family was Presbyterian, it was not covered in the book "Lot 16 United Church and its People" - possibly because so many of John's descendants became Baptist, and also because they left the Island.

John McDougall, a widower, married Miss Margaret Milligan on 17 Aug 1865; Douglas Milligan and Theophilis Clarke were witness, and the minister was the Presbyterian minister for Richmond Bay East, and Summerside, Rev. W. R. Frame.

In 1881, John (67) and his second wife Margaret (67) were living with his married son Lewis. There were also William, age 17 and Margaret, age 13, last name McDougall - grandchildren?

He was not in the 1891 census, and some undocumented family trees place his date of death at 1888. His will was presented for probate around November 1888. Children named in his will were Henry, James, Lewis, Allan, Mary Millman and Robert. Allan, James and Mary each received 2 sheep; Henry, James, Lewis and Robert got land.
