Daughter of Thomas Ramsay and Hannah Penrose Ellis.
Penrose, when she married Charles Leighton, said it was her first marriage. She also said her son Frank, born 1881, was the son of Duncan McIntyre, from Lot 11- he could be the Duncan, a cooper from Cape Breton, mentioned in the book Along the North Shore by J Clinton Morrison.
Hannah Penrose's husband Charles died a few years after their marriage. There was a Penrose Leighton working as a servant in the 1900 and 1910 US census in Massachusetts.
