Ramsay, Neil - Lot 14 Jr.

Birth Name Ramsay, Neil - Lot 14 Jr.
Gender male
Age at Death about 59 years, 6 months

Notes

Note

NO PROOF THAT HE BELONGS WITH THIS FAMILY. He could also be the son of John Ramsay and Margaret Penman, said to have been born in 1805 in Lot 13.

However, although his parentage is uncertain, there was a Neil Ramsay who married Mary Campbell in January 1833. December, 20, 1832    Niel (sic) Ramsay (B) of Lot 13 and Mary Campbell (S) of Lot 14 by the Rev. John Kier (sic), J.P.
David Ramsay (who married Sarah Carr) and Hugh Carr were witnesses at this marriage.

There aren't always baptismal records, but Neil and Mary Campbell were on the marriage records for some of the children listed. Archibald, son of Neil Jr.was baptized 12 Apr 1846, from Lot 14.

This David might belong with this family; however, if he was the David Ramsay who died in 1857, then he was the second son of Neil Ramsay, and we would be looking for an older brother for him. Since Neil and Mary were married in 1833, there was a gap from 1833-1837:

Child's Full Name David Ramsay
Place of Birth Lot 14
Baptismal Date 20 November 1837
Officiating Clergy McGregor
Father's Name Neil Ramsay
Church Name Presbyterian
Church Location Richmond Parish

This could be the same David who died in 1857: The Islander – Oct 9, 1857 Died. Of Consumption, at Lot 14, on Thursday, the 17th, David, second son of Mr. Neil Ramsay, in the 20th year of his age. He bore his painful illness with much Christian fortitude and from his well-known piety and integrity of character, and good disposition, there is every reason to hope that he was prepared for the change.

Neil wrote his will on 15 June 1864. He named: Benjamin, Albert Geddie, Ann, Martha, Elizabeth, Archibald, Edmund James, Jeremiah and John McLeod, but no wife. Benjamin got the farm, and was to provide a home for his brothers and sisters. Neil's will wasn't presented for probate until 1895. Will R-210

Benjamin died about 1879, leaving the farm jointly to his brothers Edmund James and John McLeod; at the time of writing his will, Jeremiah was in the United States and Elizabeth had married. John M. Ramsay (24); Archibald (34), Jeremiah (30), Edmund (27), Albert G. (23), Martha (40) and Annie (36) were living together in Lot 14 in 1881.

In his will, Benjamin mentions a share in equipment (? not clear) that he held with John Ramsay and William Phillips.

1863 Map of Lot 14 shows W. Phillips, J. Ramsay and N. Ramsay on Wright's Road, near the top of the lot. In Meacham's 1880 Atlas, on the same road, Phillips, Elizabeth Ramsay, Albert Ramsay, Edmund Ramsay, and John Mc. Ramsay; Alex McDonald, Donald McIntosh.
