Things were sometimes rocky in the Brander household. In 1910, John was before the district court charged with neglecting to support his wife and three children. His wife testified that he earned $25/week and that he had not contributed anything towards support of herself and their children for 5 weeks. John said he only earned $18/week, and that he left home because his wife refused to speak to him or to get his meals. The Judge ordered him to pay his wife $10/week. At first he said he would rather go to jail, but changed his mind and agreed with the settlement.
Funeral services for John A Brander, former member of the Board of Public Works, were held in his residence this afternoon. Mr Brander died Monday in Saugus. He had been in poor health for a year. Two weeks ago he suffered a heart attack. He was living in Saugus with his oldest daughter Mrs Gladys Garofano, wife of Representative Tony Garafano. He was employed as a salesman by a large packing company in Boston for many years. He leaves his wife, Mrs Matilda, two daughters, Mrs Garafano and Mrs Joyce Murphy of Chelsea and one son Earl, of this city. Boston Globe 27 January 1932 page 22
