Notes

Note

Edmund Henry, son of Thomas Birch and Agnes Ellis, was born in Birch Hill on March 1, 1851. He worked for Senator John Yeo until 1877, when he purchased a farm, which, against all predictions, he made prosperous. He married Elizabeth Ann Maynard in 1879. They had seven children, six of whom were recorded in the PEI Baptismal Index, all baptized in the Anglican church in Port Hill: James Russell (1881), Ernest Reagh (1882), Thomas Reagh (1884), Eliza Florence (1887), Percy Lawrence (1889) and Bertha Jane (1891). John Walter, baptized in 1880, was killed accidentally at two years.

In the 1911 census, Reg, Percy, Florence and Bertha were living at home.

"Edmund was constantly on the lookout for weeds, which he pulled by hand and destroyed. As he grew older he became almost completely blind. On one of his regular visits to the old homestead, he expressed his frustration in knowing the weeds were there and being unable to see in order to destroy them", from Leaves from the Birches of Avoca by Jeanette Birch.

Edmund's hard work was reflected in his obituary:

The death of the well known Edmund H. Birch of Birch Hill occurred on April 30 suddenly following an accident which resulted in breaking his leg. After a long and most useful life in the community where he was born and ever after lived and who will long be remembered as a man who devoted his entire life to the best and most promotive interests of the Island. He was a tiller of the soil and by the sweat of his brow accomplished much. Farm after farm came into his possession and unlike the present generation daylight savings held no horrors for him who in his early manhood never allowed the five a.m. hour to find him napping. His deliberate fellowship was not the least of his ambitions, his broad jolly smile and firm magnetic handshake will not be forgotten by those who enjoyed them. A man of deep moral philosophy, a kind respectful son, an ever faithful husband and a father whose deeds speak louder than words. He was a staunch member of the St. James Anglican Church, Port Hill. In his devout duties he served as Warden and warden emeritus and as a delegate. always an important consultant on matters of church interest.
He was the son of the late Thomas and Mrs. Birch of Port Hill. In his early manhood he married Elizabeth Ann Maynard, daughter of the late John and Mrs. Maynard, a popular family of Low Point, who predeceased him by two years.
He leaves to greatly mourn a family of four son and four daughters all located in close proximity, one brother and two sisters.
