Some Ancestry trees suggest that he was John Clark Ellis, son of John Ellis and Elizabeth Campbell, who was born November 1838. However, the John Ellis who married Mary McInnis said he was born in May, and that his father was born in England and his mother in Ireland. This might have been a simple mistake - Ireland for the Island, for instance. And dates of birth are often wrong on census records. The John Ellis who went to Connecticut never used a middle name or initial. His death record said his father was James Ellis and his mother Elizabeth Gane (or Cain or Cane?).

In 1870, John and Mary, born born PEI were living in Massachusetts with three children, Mary, William J., and Harry. Two of their children were born in Boston. John and Mary were back on the Island by 1881. John was a ship carpenter in Lot 15. On the 1891 census, John said that his father was born in England and his mother in Ireland. He was a Roman Catholic.

They returned to the States, to Connecticut.

He was survived by his wife, four sons: John, William, Pius, and Harry and two daughters, Mrs John Robertson and Mrs Alexander McArthur of New York, four brothers and over 30 grandchildren. (If John Clark Ellis had died in 1911, he would have been survived by 3 brothers)

Mary died at the home of her daughter, Mrs John Robinson, in 1913. She was survived by 3 sons and a daughter.
