Downing James Robert (The Summerside Journal, 19 March 1868) Schoolteacher; d. Trout River, Lot 13, P.E.I., at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. W. Grant, 11 Feb. 1868, in 75th year. A native of County Waterford, Ireland.
Downing is listed in the book of Irish immigrants to PEI.
He married a Miss Roche, daughter of Thomas and Bridget, according to a story in the history of Bideford, Roots and Branches, by Pauline Millar. She drowned around 1827, along with her infant daughter.
Downing taught on the Island, and then in 1838 took daughters to Kent County New Brunswick. They must have returned to the Island by 1844, when Julianna married William Grant.
He could be the man over 60 in William Grant's household in the 1861 census.
