Russell worked his way up, and for many years was the captain of a large ship sailing between England and Australia. He then transferred to a steamship line that sailed from New York to South America. He retired about 3 years before his death.

Russell was survived by his wife, Sophia H. Ramsay, his mother Mrs Janie Ramsay, Canada; sister Mrs Penelope Waldron, Boston and brothers Ralph and Charles, in Canada.
