My Family Tree

Mary Ann was born 8 May 1836 in Prince Edward Island, the daughter of Humphrey Dyment and Mary Ashton. Her birth was not recorded in the PEI Baptismal Index, but Mary Wickett was named as a surviving daughter in Humphrey's will.

She married Henry Wickett on July 10 1853. George Lock, Humphrey Dyment, James MacDougall, and William Wickett were witnesses, and the minister, Francis Metherall, was one of the early Bible Christian missionaries who emigrated from Devon to PEI around the same time as the Dyment family. George Lock was married to an Ashton, may have been an uncle or cousin, and James MacDougall was the husband of her sister Sarah.

Henry was born in Devon, England, the son of William Wickett and Elizabeth Moore ( Elizabeth was the daughter of daughter of Richard Moor and Jane Dayman).

They had at least twelve childen: Humphrey Dyment, William Henry, Lewis Albert, Serenah Alice, Eleanor Josephine, Thomas Adams, Penrose Havelock, Sarah Ann (Annie), Sophie Jennie, Alfred Edward, Fannie Lavenia and Richard Herbert. Ellenor Josephine, Thomas Adams, Alfred Edward, Richard, Serena Alice, and William Henry were in the PEI Baptismal Index, with eldest son Humphrey under the name Dyment (parents' last names reversed).

Henry and Mary Ann lived in Northam, moving to Granville, P.E.I. in 1872 to operate a mill. Their first 9 children were born in Northam (1854-1871), and the next three were born in Granville (1873-1878).

In the 1861 census, the family consisted of Henry and Mary Ann, 1 boy under 5, 2 boys between 5-15, and one girl under 5. By the time of the 1881 census, Henry and Mary Ann were living with two of their married children, Humphrey and his wife and son, and William and his wife Rebecca Jane. There is an indication on the page that the older son and his family had recently moved.

After Henry's death, Mary Ann moved to Maine with some of her children, possibly in 1883. On 23 September 1884, Mary Ann, age 45, married James Grady, age 38 in Old Town, Maine. Mary Ann Grady died in Old Town, Maine on 14 September 1896 at the age of 60 (60 years, 4 months and 6 days). On the death record, her parents were given as Humphrey Dyment and Elizabeth Ashton, both born in England.

"The death of Mrs. James Grady occurred Monday night after a
lingering illness. She was sixty years of age. Besides her
husband, she leaves 12 children by a former husband............."

Gravestone in Forest Hill Cemetary, Great Works, Old Town Maine: Mary A. Dyment, wife of James Grady formerly wife of Henry Wickett, died September 14 1896 at age 60. I know my Redeemer lives and that He shall stand in the latter day upon the earth and after my skin worms destroy this body; yet in my flesh I shall see God.
