Notes

Note

Daughter of Charles Dyment and Elizabeth McDougall.

Mary Ashton Dyment was not in the PEI Baptismal Index, but she was living in the household of Levi Dyment in the 1881 census. Her date of birth came from the 1901 census.

Mary Ashton Dyment married Albert J. Phillips in September 1883: "At the Methodist parsonage in Summerside on the 12th inst by Rev. J. S. Allen, Albert J. Phillips of Port Hill to Miss Mary Dyment of Tyne Valley." Summerside Journal September 13 1883. The church record shows two witnesses, both with the last name Allen, who were probably relatives of the minister.

In the 1891 census, Mary and Albert (age 29) were living in Lot 12 with their children Alberta, Alex, Levi and Florence.

In the 1901 census, the children living at home were: Bertha M (28 March 1885), Alex S (1887), Levi J, Florence G, Charles, Thomas, Mary D., Annie E, Albert A, Ruth (1900). Mary Ashton and Albert Phillips were living in Summerside. From son Alexander's obituary, his father was a constable in Summerside before moving to a farm.

Albert James Phillips was described as one of the officers enforcing prohibition on the Island in the book Booze by Clinton Morrison.

By the time of the 1911 census, the family had moved to Brackley Point, Lot 33. Mary A. was the head of household, a married woman, with children Charles, Annie, Albert, Ruth (1903), Wendal (1906), and Layton (1907) still at home. Son Charles was a farm manager.

Albert Sr. was again the head of household in the 1921 census, and the family was continuing to farm in Brackley Point, Lot 33. At home were Albert J (60), Mary (59), Albert E 22, Wendell 17, Leonard 14 and Leighton 13.

In 1922 the family moved to Harrington, PEI. In the History of Harrington, children listed were: Charles, Levi, Sterling, Scott, Albert, Wendell, Leighton, and Leonard; and Bertha, Florence, Ethel, Mae and Ruth. Some, if not all, of this section was provided by the Phillips family.

Albert J. Phillips (1861-1953) and Mary Dyment (1862-1942) were buried in Sherwood Cemetery. "In Harrington November 23 Mary Ashton Dyment, wife of Albert Phillips, 80, leaving her husband, seven sons and five daughters." Maple Leaf Magazine, Nov Dec 1942 page 104.

Mary's obituary was published in the Summerside Journal 23 November 1942, page 7, col. 2, available from PEI Ancestry. She died in her 80th year. The children listed were: Levi J. Phillips, Halifax; Scott Phillips, Hodgsville, Sask.; Wendall Phillips and Leonard Phillips, Charlottetown; and Charles Phillips, Albert Phillips and Layton Phillips. The daughters were: Mrs. George Jones, Regina; Mrs. George Henderson, Bedeque; Mrs. A. E. Woodside, Summerside; Mrs. Harold Stead, Brackley; and Mrs. George A. Horne, Oyster Bed Bridge. The Guardian newspaper printed similar obituaries, on Wednesday November 25, 1942.

Mary's certificate of registration of death, with information provided by her widower, said her father's name was Charles Dyment, and her mother's name was Mary Ashton Dyment (her grandmother), a likely mistake, given that she was named after Mary Ashton.
