Narrative

Jennie was born around 1870 (10 July 1873 on 1901 census, but age 12 in the 1881 census). She was the youngest daughter of Charles Dyment and Elizabeth McDougall, but was not in the PEI Baptismal Index.

Jennie Dyment, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth, married William Campbell in Massachusetts in 1891. Both the bride and groom were from PEI. Jennie was 19. William was a carpenter. They were back living on the Island in Lot 12 in 1901 with five of their children, and although there are birth records for the older children in Massachusetts they were all listed as being born on PEI. The family consisted of William (28), Elizabeth J. (27), Everett (9), Richard (7), Elena (6), William (4) and Ethel (2).

From various records, for herself and her children, Jennie's full name was Elizabeth Jane.

The marriage of Jennie and William Campbell seems to have ended in divorce. There is a record for their son, Wilbur Lawrence Campbell, born 9 June 1902 in Sommerville, Mass. It looks like Violet was born in 1903 in Maine, and by 1904 William had married Agnes Dolan, 28, a parlour maid from Ireland. It was his second marriage, and he claimed to be divorced on the marriage record.

Jennie Campbell, age 37, was in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1910 living with her children Everett, Richard, Lena, Ethel, William and Violet on Regent Street. She had been married 19 years, and had had 7 children, 6 living. She gave her status as married. In the same census, William Campbell (age 50) from PEI was living with Agnes and two young children in Winchester, Mass.

In 1912, Jennie sought custody of her children according to a notice in the Cambridge Chronicle, 10 August 1912: Seeks Custody of Children. Mrs. Jennie E. Campbell has filed a petition In the probate court stating that she and her husband. William D. Campbell, of Arlington, are living apart. She asks for the custody of Everett H Campbell, aged 20; Richard C Campbell, aged 18; Lena E. Campbell, aged 17; William C. Campbell, aged 15; Ethel M. Campbell, aged 13, and Violet J. Campbell, aged 8.

Around this time, Everett Campbell, a 20 year old male living on Regent Street in Cambridge, was in trouble with the law for a joyride he took with a friend, in that friend's former employer's car. Richard Colin Campbell and a friend stole some grammaphone records, but were caught.

Jennie moved frequently in Cambridge, from Regent to Richdale Ave to Elm to Arcadia. From various social news items, the children were living with her from 1910 to 1914, at least. Jennie gave her status as the widow of William Campbell in city directories.

In 1917, Jennie married Austin M. Farwell Jr. Austin Merrick Farwell, Jr., 42, machinist, 70 Richdale avenue, and Jennie Campbell, 42, at home, 70 Richdale avenue.

In 1920, William Campbell was living with his wife Agnes and two distinct sets of children. First listed were four children, ranging in age from 4-14, including the two from the 1920 census (one was Steadman Campbell, a fairly distinct name). Then the older children were listed: Everett H. (25) , Richard C. (26) , Lena E. (24), William (22) and Violet (17).

None of Jennie's children were living with William and Agnes Campbell after the 1920 census. In 1930, Jennie and Austin had William C. Campbell, described as Austin's step-son, living with them. He was 30, born in Massachusetts. Jennie was living at 4 West Street in Somerville when her son Everett died in 1932.

I was unable to find Jennie in the 1940 US census, and the last city directory listing for Austin and Jennie was 1937. Unfortunately, the obituaries for her sisters Mary and Sarah did not list any brothers or sisters, and Charles' obituary only named Levi.

There was a Mass. Death Index entry for Jennie Dyment Farwell who died December 21, 1938 in Westborough, father Charles.
