Death David Steeves is Mourned

The death in City Hospital yesterday morning [14 Jan 1948] of David Steeves removed one of Moncton's retired pioneer merchants, one who was among the early business men on St. George street and who had contributed a great deal to the upbuilding of the central and western section of that street as a mercantile area in the city. His passing came unexpectedly following complications which developed after a fall in his home in Norwood Avenue last week when he sustained a fractured bone in one foot.

David Steeves was a native of Indian Mountain, Westmorland County, being born on November 13, 1864, a son of the late Alfred and Annie (Maddison) Steeves. He was thus in his 83rd year.

Mr. Steeves was predeceased by his wife [Phoebe M.A. Jones] a dozen years ago. He leaves to mourn 1 stepson, Walter Humphrey, and a stepdaughter, Mrs Bertha Hopper, both of this city, 2 brothers, Frank of Steeves Mountain and Sherman of Moncton and 2 sisters, Mrs. Ada Gammon of Wheaton Settlement and Mrs. Marven Lutes of Berry Mills.
