Lemuel was not living with his parents in the 1871 census. In the 1881, Lemuel was a shoemaker living in Chatham with his wife Mary and their infant son William. He and Mary had three sons. Albert Frederick went to the States, and died in WW1. Ernest Horton lived in Truro, Nova Scotia, and died there, unmarried. There was no record of William after the 1901 census. In the 1911 and the 1921 census, Lemuel and Mary were living on their own in Chatham.

The Moncton Transcript | May 25, 1928 noted that Ernest had been called home because of the death of his father.

 

Lemuel H. Abbott was for many years the chair of the Board of Assessment for the town of Chatham, was survived by his wife Margaret McLean and 2 sons, William of Minet, Washington and Ernest of Truro, and 4 grandchildren, sons and daughters of his late son Frederick who died in the Great War.
