William Johnstone was a paper worker living in Lawrence, Massachusetts according to city directories in 1924 and 1925. He returned to PEI for the first time in four years in February 1929, for the funeral of his brother Garfield.
Johnstone was a carpenter when he started the paperwork to become an American citizen in 1924. On the declaration, he described himself as having light hair and blue eyes. He was 5'10" and weighed 175 lbs. In 1934, when Johnstone filled out another form for US citizenship, he was living in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was working as a produce dealer.
