Johanna was the daughter of John Brooks and Christy Ramsay. Year of birth was 1841 in 1881, 1837 in 1901, and 1829 in 1911. On her death record, her date of birth was 21 April 1838 and she died at age 84.

Johanna was left silver cake dishes by her younger sister Mattie. At the time of Mattie's death in 1898, Johanna's age was about 52.

She had lived in Port Hill for 63 years, which matches her marriage to Hugh Ramsay in 1860.

Johanna was a widow at the time of her death, and was survived by a family of five, three sons and two daughters: John, Ellerslie; Dan and Colin on the homestead; Margaret in New York, and Sarah in Brooklyn, N.Y. Two sons, Sargent and William predeceased her.

A number of family trees say Johanna was the daughter of John Brooks and Christie Ramsay; on her death record her father was John Brooks and her mother Marianne Ramsay, according to information supplied by her son Colin. It wasn't unusual for children to not know the names of their grandparents. She was named in the will of John Brooks.
