According to the History of the Ellis Family, Lutie's husband died young, leaving her with two boys, Arnold and Walter.

After her mother died, Stella and Forest were living with Lutie in the 1920 US census. Neither was living with Lutie in 1930. In 1940, Lutie was living with her son Arnold in Massachusetts, and Walter, age 21, was living in lodgings in Maryland.
