My Family Tree

An article about Kate, on the occasion of her birthday, in the Guardian said her father was William George Ramsay. However, family say that DNA shows no Ramsay connection, although she could be a cousin of Jane Stewart Ramsay. Her mother was said to have abandoned her as a young girl.

She was not with William George and Jane Ramsay in the 1881 census. I was unable to find her in another household the 1881 census, and there was no Catherine or Kate Ramsay born May 1872-75 in the PEI Baptismal Index. There was an Elizabeth Catherine Stewart, age 11, in the household of James and Margaret Ann Stewart in Lot 13 in 1881 - she was listed after two younger members of the family, which sometimes indicates a non-family member.

At the age of 15 in 1891, there was a Katie Ramsay in Lot 18, a domestic in the household of an older couple, John and Margaret Ramsay and their sons along with a child identified as "infant Ramsay". Katie, born May 10 1874, was in the same household in the 1901 census, now headed by Neil Ramsay. The other domestic was Mary Ramsay, age 10.

She married a widower, Joseph Coulson.
