Son of Willard L Appley and Kate McAllester. James Wallace married Lucy Mann, his second wife, in 1910 in Massachusetts. He died in 1968. On various forms, James gave his place of birth as Canada, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. At the time of his marriage to Lucy, James was divorced and living with his mother and sister in Massachusetts.
According to an article in the Evening Independent, dated 1982, James W. was an inventor and an original member of the Society for Automotive Engineers; he was also a member of the team that built the locks at the Panama Canal. When he moved to Florida, he established a machine shop. His son James took over, and, during the war, did repair for for the Navy and Coast Guard. James Jr. sold the company to his two sons, and one son later bought out his brother.
One of his patents: 1942: James Appley has been granted a patent on a new type molding machine for plastic material .
