Notes
Note
Jane was baptized in Charlottetown, PEI in 1819, but usually gave New Brunswick, where she lived from the time she was about 3 years old, as her place of birth.
m. Douglastown (North. Co.) 27th June [1839] , by Rev. James Souter, Andrew WOODSIDE / Miss Jane ABBOT both of Newcastle Parish. Witnesses were John Crawford Abbott and George Burchill.
The family left New Brunswick before the 1851 NB census, and went to New York, Illinois, Iowa and finally settled in Colorado. Son Andrew was born in 1848 in Buffalo, New York, and later biographies said he came to Iowa in 1851. The family was in Iowa for an 1854 census - Andrew Woodside had a household of 5 males and 3 females. At the time of the 1856 census, the listing for the household headed by Andrew Woodside (45) included his wife Jane (37), and children Jane (15), William (12), Andrew (9), Thomas (4) and Elizabeth (2). In this census they said they had been residing in the state for 5 years, except for the two youngest who had been born in Iowa. The others had their birthplace recorded as Ireland, possibly because of the use of ditto marks from the entries above theirs. George was born in 1857.
In 1860, Jane was a widow, in Davenport, with Jane (19), William (15), Thomas (8), Elizabeth (5) and George, age 3.
Jane was also identified as the widow of Andrew in an 1863 Davenport Iowa city directory, so it is assumed her husband Andrew died before 1863, perhaps as early as 1860. In 1867, Jane was living with her mother and sons William and Andrew. In the 1870 US census, her son William, 24, was the head of household with Jane, age 50, and his brothers and sisters: Jane (26) Thomas (19), Lizzie (14) and George (12). William was working as a clerk, and Thomas was a book-binder. Thomas and William were in Davenport city directories until 1877. Son Andrew J. had served as a private in the Civil War, and was working as a clerk in Davenport.
Jane was in Iowa up until the 1880 US census. She was in a city directory living with her son Andrew in Denver in 1884, and was in the Colorado State Census of 1885. George was also working for his brother Andrew, and living in his home as well in 1884, but not in 1885.
Youth and Old Age.
Youth and old are both interested in the movement. One of the oldest members is Mrs. Jane Woodside, who has spent the latter part of her life in the work of the Woman’s Chistian Temperance union. She is now 84 years of age. Mrs. Woodside was born in St. John, New Brunswick, and moved into this country in 1851. She has lived in Denver to the last twenty years, her home now being at 1644 Emerson street. Her son, A. J. Woodside. has been a merchant in this city for the last thirty years. In marked contrast to her is Baby Ruth Leone Humphrey, another member of the organization. Baby Humphrey is but two and one-half months old. She joined in the cradle class the Ist of September, Fort Morgan Times, Volume 20, Number 14, October 30, 1903
Jane was last found in the 1900 census, living with her son Andrew in Denver, Colorado. In this census record, she said two of her six children had died, and from their absence in records in 1900 and 1910, the two could be William and Thomas. She was in Denver city directories until 1905, but was not listed in 1906 or 1907.
Jane was named as a surviving sister in Elizabeth Abbott McArthur's obituary in January 1905, but I was unable to find her in the 1910 US census or in later city directories for Denver or Davenport.
Jane said her parents were born in England, but her sister Elizabeth said Ireland.
