Notes

Note

There are no baptismal records for the children of the Hugh McArthur who arrived on the Island in 1770.

Other McArthur family trees say that one of the sons was William John, but William did not leave a single shread of evidence. The 1798 census leaves room for another son. Some of the family trees that include this son say he died in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 1874, but no record was found of a McArthur born on Prince Edward Island in the 1871 census of Nova Scotia, or of the death of a McArthur in 1874 in Nova Scotia.

I have a problem with his name - William John. Note from many family trees and the few records available, the Scottish settlers in Prince County had children with one name at this time. Scottish parish records in this era also tended to be one name. It has been my experience that when there are two names, one of the names could be the father's name, if there were several men with the same name in the same area - or I've seen two separate people mashed together and given two names.
