Narrative

According to the Birch family history, Florence worked in the United States for several years as a seamstress. Since she was living at home in 1911, and married in 1912 at the age of 25 that doesn't leave many years, unless she was in the States before 1911. She had an aunt, Damaris Louise, who had a milinery story in Boston, and Florence was an excellent needleworker.

At her wedding, the bridesmaid was Lulu Yeo; best man was Reg Birch. (This adds some evidence to the family story that Reg and Lulu were young sweethearts who didn't marry until much later in life).

The marriage of Miss Eliza Florence Birch, eldest daughter of Mr. Edward A. McArthur of Northam, was solemnized in St. James Church, Port Hill at 7 pm on Wednesday 20th. Rev. C. de Wolfe White of Summerside was the officiating clergyman and a very large congregation witnessed the ceremony.

My Dad remembers the kindness of his aunt and uncle, who lived near his grandparents. He was once told to keep the dog in the house, but he let it out - his uncle just sighed and went after the dog.

Florence didn't like to talk about her age until she was much older. When asked how she was, she said, "Not bad for a 80 year old."
