Narrative

Is Cephas B. the same son as John B. Murley? Was his full name Cephas John Bradford Murley?

Obituaries for Eleanor and Isaac both agree that they were survived by two sons, but for Isaac in 1922, the sons were James and Cephas, at home. When Eleanor died, she was survived by two sons, James and John B. In 1891 and 1901, the sons were James and John (born Nov 30, 1896). A son named Cephas first appears with the family at age 15, in the 1911 census. His date of birth was February 1896- although all of the months are messed up for the family in this census.

However, in the 1911, the month of birth doesn't always agree with other records: Blanche changed from February to March, and Hazel from August to April. Hazel's son William, born in March 1911 was born in November. So perhaps not unlikely that John was called Cephas, and his month of birth was switched with his nephews. Another fact to consider is that in the 1901 census, Isaac and Eleanor were providing a home to his nephew James Cephas Ward - perhaps less confusing for the family if their eldest son remained James, nephew James Cephas became Cephas, and son Cephas John was called John. Isaac had a brother, also called Cephas Barker Murley, so there could have been some confusion with three people with the same first name in one family.

One of the Murley sons served overseas in World War 1. The newspaper item in 1919 said "Signaller C. B. Murley is a son of Mr Isaac Murley, city, and left here in 1914 when only 16 years of age to do garrison duty at Sydney, NS. In the Spring of 1915 he went overseas with the C. M. R [Canadian Mounted Rifles] and has been continuously on service ever since. He has taken part in such battles as Ypres, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendale, Holl 70, Amiens, Arras, Drocourt-Quent., Cambrai and entered Mons with the 3rd Division on the memorable morning on Nov 11th. He has a wonderful record as a soldier and returns in good health after his strenuous experiences."

C. B. Murley did not have a CEF Personnel file, but his brother J. B. Murley did. John Bradford Murley served with the 5th and 6th Canadian Mounted Rifles in WW1. It was J. B. Murley, a Signaller, on the passenger list when he returned to Canada in 1919. But part-way through J. B. Burley's file, he was called Cephas Bradford Murley.

A son named Cephas was at home with his parents in 1921. He had a military pension.

Cephas B. Murley travelled to Boston under that name in 1922 and 1923, profession was reporter. When John B. Murley married Lillian Wheatley, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ebenezer Wheatley, he was the sporting editor of the Patriot.
