Narrative

According to the 1901 census, John Mann was born June 6 1834. The local history of Irishtown/Burlington identifies him as a son of William and Sarah Mann, and he was a surviving brother of Matilda Mann Paynter, according to her obituary. Like his father, he was a carpenter and farmer.

William Mann Sr. transferred his land to his son John on 24 December 1866, in an agreement between William Mann Sr. of Irishtown, Lot 20 PEI and his son John Mann, witnessed by James Mann. John was to provide the said William Mann with good and sufficient board and lodgings, and sufficient raiment, and free access to all parts of the house.

He married Elizabeth Moase (1847-1894), the daughter of Henry Moase and Sarah Elizabeth Dickieson of New Annan in 1876. I was unable to find a marriage record or license, but John signed a marriage bond on 20 November 1876. He was a bachelor and Elizabeth a spinster, both from New London. The other signature on the bond was an innkeeper in St. Eleanor's, Benjamin Weatherbee.

John and Elizabeth lived in Irishtown and had one son, William Reagh. They later moved to Kensington.

This is probably the John Mann who was listed in the index to the 1871 Land Commissioner's report, with 100 acres in Lot 20.

In the 1881 census, John's nephew William Johnstone Mann (age21) and his sister Mary (age 58) were living with him and his wife as well as a five year old girl named Mary Ticking. In 1891, John (Mans) was age 56, his wife Elizabeth 44 and their son Willie R. was 4. They had moved to Lot 19. They had a one and a half story house, with 7 rooms.

Elizabeth Moase died in 1894, when Willie was 8.

John remarried in the Margate Methodist Church in 1895, to Elizabeth Hamilton, a widow from Margate. She was born September 29 1838 in New Brunswick, and it is possible that she was the widow of James Hamilton, a shoemaker in Margate.

John Mann died on December 5 1905. His obituary, found on the website PEI Ancestry, stated: "The death occurred at Kensington Tuesday morning after a long illness of John Mann, carpenter, aged 71, leaving a widow and one son to mourn."

In the 1911 census, his son William was living in Margate with his wife and son and his step-mother Elizabeth Hamilton Mann (born September 1842).

John left a sum of money to his widow, and everything else to his son Willie, in his will.
