Born in Prince Edward Island, Canada on 2 May 1878 to John MacLean and Sarah Stuart MacDougald.

Elsie was working at the Danvers Insane Hospital in Massachusetts in 1900. She said she had emigrated in 1895. She and Frank Crosby were married in Massachusetts, and their first daughter was born there.

In the 1920 US census, Frank was the Deputy Warden at the RI State Prison. Elsie's sister Tamar was also living in Rhode Island at the time, but not with her sister. They had three children.

Elsie died on 20 Mar 1965 in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.
