Notes

Note

Tamar is a female in the 1881 census, but a male in the 1891 census. Tamar could be both a girls and a boy's name, but more likely Tamar was a girl, named after her aunt. In her mother's obituary in the Guardian she was called Miss, and was living in Rhode Island at the time of her mother's death in 1909.

The History of Brae adds that she was a nurse, and was noted for her artistic handiwork and dressmaking, as well as painting and sketching.

Later family obituaries only give the daughters' married names. The obituaries for Jane Adelaide and Allan Fraser include a sister named Mrs. Robert McEndy of Providence, Rhode Island. Since all of the other sisters were accounted for, this has to be Tamar.

There was only one Robert McEndy found in Rhode Island records. In November 1921, Christine McLane, a nurse, married Robert McEndy in Rhode Island. In the 1930 US census, Christine McEndy said she had emigrated in 1919 (probably earlier). She gave her age as 43, born 1887. She was three years older than her husband.

Tamar/Christine may have originally emigrated to Massachusetts with her sister Elsie, who married in Massachusetts before moving to Rhode Island. I have to assume that her name was Christine Tamar, and in the States she was called by her first name. Another possibility was that there was another daughter not recorded elsewhere.

Christine McEndy was at the same address as Robert in the 1935 Rhode Island census, but said she was widowed. This must be a mistake, as Robert was enumerated on the same day, at the same address. Christine gave her date of birth - June 11 1881.

Christine and Robert were together in city directories, with Christine occasionally saying she was working as a nurse.

In the 1940 US census, Christina gave her age as 56; her husband was 50. He was a linotype operator for a newspaper. They lived at 15 Church Street.

Mrs. Robert McEndy died Feb 7 1951, from find-a-grave, and the Providence city directory for 1952. The dates on her gravestone were 1886-1951, and her maiden name was Mclane.
