Notes
Note
Still working on this branch of the family tree - some of the connections I've made are assumptions! The name McFadyen is linked to the Islands of Mull and Coll in Scotland. The name appears as MacPhaiden, McFadzean, MacFadyen, McFadden, MacFadden, McPatton, McFadgeon, McFadern, McFayden etc. According to one source, they backed the wrong candidate to be King of Scotland, and lost Mull to the McLeans, Hector and Laughlin.
John McFadyen emigrated from Mull, Argyleshire, Scotland in 1808 and settled in the Clyde River area, according to an article in the Charlottetown Guardian, written on the occasion of his descendant Hector McFadyen's 100th birthday. "Hector McFadyen was born January 1, 1810, two years after his father John McFadyen and his brother Alexander arrived from Mull, Argylshire, Scotland. From these two families have sprung the numerous progeny of McFadyens in the vicinity as well as Darrachs, Clyde River, McLeans, Desable, and many others." The article noted Hector's sharp mind.
There were several ships sailing from Oban to Prince Edward Island in 1808, including the Clarendon, Elizabeth and Mars, all carrying settlers from Mull and Colonsay.
Many stories about brothers emigrating together turn out to be untrue, and it is possible that Alexander arrived on the Island in 1806, two years earlier. The Neil McFadyen in Augustine Cove also came from Mull, but a few years earlier, in 1803. These families could have connections from back in Scotland.
There was an "Angus McPhardon", age 2, on the ship Humphreys of London which arrived on the Island in July 14, 1806, with Alex McPhardon, 28, and Elizabeth McPhardon, age 24, among the 97 passengers. The two year old, I believe, was Angus McFadyen, the carpenter, who lived in Lot 31 on the Tryon Road, who I have labeled Angus 2. Alex McFadyen and his wife Elizabeth McKinnon also had a daughter Flora, who was born at sea and baptized once they arrived on the Island.
I also believe that Archie McFadyen's father Angus (Angus 1), who settled on the Bannockburn Road in Lot 31 in 1808, was the son of the brother John McFadyen who arrived in 1808.
ASSUMING that John was around the same age as his brother Alexander, he could be the John McFadern in Lot 65 in the 1841 census, a man born in Scotland who was over 60 years of age. There was a woman over 60, and a younger man, probably an unmarried son. Both the woman and the younger man were born on the Island.
There was no Alexander McFadyen over 60 in this census, although the Alexander McFadyen in Lot 65 said 2 members of his household were born in Scotland.
There was an Alexander McFadyen, born PEI about 1810, son of John and Jane, who died in New Hampshire 29 Jun 1858.
There is supposed to be a quitclaim deed of Alexander MacFadyen who emigrated to PEI along with his brother John had the following heirs, Angus, Donald, Neil, Peter, Mary, Flora, Catherine (Darrach). Can't find this in the conveyance records?
